How long will it take to become a driving instructor?
Regardless of which driving instructor training company you choose to train with, the time it takes to qualify as a driving instructor is subject to the DSA’s examination schedules. There are three parts to the qualifying examination, a theory test, a driving test and a practical test of your ability to instruct. Each part has to be taken consecutively, and each will carry with it a six week waiting period (sometimes longer). Consequently, the exam process itself from start to finish is about 18 weeks assuming there are no other delays. This is why intensive training for Part 1, 2 or 3 is unsuitable and why it is better to spread out the driving instructor training over several weeks on a part-time basis with studying and practice in between.
Tailor made driving instructor training
The LDC driving instructor course has therefore been tailored in such a way that it fits around the DSA’s exam schedule, and as well as minimising any ‘idle’ periods in training whilst waiting for a test date, the flexibility of our part-time driving instructor training course also allows students to manage their training around any other full or part-time commitments they have. Bearing this in mind, it will inevitably take a number of months to fully qualify. However, if you train with a driving school such as LDC, you are allowed to operate and earn money as a trainee driving instructor after you have passed the second part of the exam. Although not essential, this would enable you to get up to six months part-time or full-time practical experience in preparation for the Part 3 test.
The LDC driving instructor course is made up of three separate courses, one for each part. As you will see from the information in this website, the courses provide well over 200 hours of home study and practical in-car training in total spread over a few months on a part-time basis.
